Guild members will be selling tickets for the raffle quilt (drawing at Christmas in the Hills). Also, Ann and Brian will donate a quilt to be raffled on June 25th—proceeds of this raffle will go to cover expense of the display, publicity, etc., and any remainder will go to the Guild. If you wish to sell a quilt, put a price tag and contact information on it. (The Guild will not be responsible for selling your quilt.)
Anyone may display a quilt, not just Guild members. A copy of the registration form will be printed in the Hot Springs Star. In the past, quilters from Custer have participated in Guild shows here. Quilts can be delivered to The Quilt Shop in Custer and a courier who works at the VA will bring them down to Heartsong, and return them again to Custer.

perforations by running your sewing machine needle across the paper. Without thread.) Get your tickets to sell from Laurna. Laurna will be responsible for moving the quilt display among various businesses.

Tips: If a quilt is made to be used and will be washed, some quilters like to loosely zigzag the edge after the quilting is finished and then wash the quilt before adding the binding. Heavily quilted areas will shrink more than those that are lightly quilted, leading to uneven, distorted edges. Once the quilt is washed, it can be blocked and dried flat before the edge is cleaned up and binding is added.

CALL MEETING TO ORDER:

President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. There were 27 members present and 2 guests, Gina and Leslie Elmore.

MINUTES:

Delores Hagman moved to approve the minutes from the March 2011 meeting and Cora seconded the motion. Unanimous approval. Shirley recorded the March minutes, in the absence of Secretary Judy.

TREASURER:

Laurna Nelson read the Treasurer's report. The beginning balance being $4,622.27 and income deposited from 2011 membership dues is $210.00 and expenses paid out to Bev Carlson are $97.70 leaving an ending balance of $4,734.57. Julie Standen moved to approve the report as read and Margaret Ellen seconded the motion.

DISCUSSION:

There are now 54 members in the guild this year. Judy Gifford is resigning from the secretary position so we will be looking for someone to take over that position.

OTHER OFFICER REPORTS:
VP:

Margaret Ellen, Elaine Anderson, and Ann Powers are the members who will be hanging quilts for the month of May.

Librarian:

Caroline has the new Quilters magazine and it will be put into the library.

Historian:

Helen had no report.

Program:

Joan announced that for the May meeting we are to sort thru our stash and get a fat quarter that is the ugliest fabric we have, so we can do an ugly fabric challenge contest. We are to bring it to the meeting in a plain wrapper or somehow so no one else will be able to see what it is and we will all vote for the ugliest piece of fabric and the owner of the winning fabric will win a prize. Then at the June workday we will follow up with a piece of fabric to make a block using a new technique.

Beth announced that last month was the last month to get our blocks finished so that the recipients can get them put together. So we won't have any more Block of the month drawings until August.

We are to work on our 2011 Centennial Block Harvest fair blocks and plan to show them in the month of July.

Ballots were passed around to get our ideas and opinions for what everyone wanted to do for block of the month from now on. (Edit. See end of Newsletter for ballot results.) We want to hear your great ideas. The new idea will be announced in July and in August we will begin the new block of the month. So in May, June and July work on your fair blocks.

COMMITTEE REPORTS: None

CHARITY QUILTS: None

OLD BUSINESS:

Rosie Elmore and her two daughters, Leslie and Gina, were present at this time. Rosie was presented with two quilts. The first, a quilt from Christa Achtenberg that she and Deb Winter made for Rosie. The quilt was entitled “Modern Rose”. The second, was a quilt made with blocks contributed from Guild members, with a western and gardening theme, including pictures of Rosie and her horses.

SUMMER SHOW: Ann and Brian Powers will be chairing a summer quilt show. They have obtained permission to have it on the veranda of the Evans Hotel. A committee will need to be generated to help with this event. We need helpers as it will be during the same weekend of the arts and crafts in the park and the Miss SD pageant. The date for this is Saturday June 25th. We will need to know who is going to be around then and willing to work on that Saturday and also who is willing to donate quilts to be hung. A sheet was passed around for sign up to help work and to hang quilts.

A motion was made by Beth to proceed with the quilt show and the motion was seconded by Stacey.

DISCUSSION: Blocks for the New Zealand and Japan earthquake crisis were discussed and it was mentioned that the New Zealand website says we are not to just send blocks but they wanted finished quilts instead of just quilt blocks or a cash donation. A motion was made to send $200.00 to the New Zealand and Japan earthquake crisis by way of the Red Cross. Discussion followed and motion failed by a show of hands.

NEW BUSINESS:

FAIR: Karen spoke about the fair this year and we will have the same awards as last year with the exception of an award from Nuts and Bolts in that this year they will be donating a $25.00 gift certificate to be given away for the harvest block. The Chadron Festival of Quilts is the weekend of April 15 thru 17th.

Copies of the current by-laws are available and every member is encouraged to get a copy.

The 2012 raffle quilt center is done but it needs a vine appliquéd on the border. We are looking for anyone (4 people) to appliqué on it. It is needed back by June to put the corners together.

Block of the Month Balloting:

Results...

What our balloting proved is that we are a flexible group ready to try different projects and yet comfortable with what we've done. Thank you to all who participated.

Block of the Month: 9 voted for a calendar/monthly theme, 8 to continue the "winner's choice" approach, 5 to do a BOM and keep the block for yourself, and 5 for a random 'winner gets whatever approach'. There were 2 suggestions, first to draw a random block design for the month and second, to do this every other month. We had 10 votes for a mystery quilt over a 3-4 month time frame and one emphatic NO to this project. Doing a Sudoku puzzle in fabric or fracturing a poster/picture and replicating it in fabric both got 4 votes. Under "how about?", small wall hangings (Patchabilities style) and wool/felt projects were suggested. There were 4 write-in votes for a cookie block exchange (make x number of the same block and share them).

In July, the next series will be announced and we'll plan to get started for the fall. Don't forget to do a block for the Block Harvest for the Centennial of the Fall River Co Fair. See you and your projects at the Fair.

Tips: Remove fabric or quilts from the dryer before they are completely dry. Fabric is easier to iron when the wrinkles haven’t been hard set by the heat, and slightly damp quilts can be laid out and squared up on the floor. There’s also less wear on the finish of the materials.

National Quilting Day:

March 19th is National Quilting Day. The Guild will have a "quilt-in" at the Hot Springs Library from 1-2 pm. If you would like to join us, please contact Beth via email at sdgirl1967@hotmail.com or 745-6548.

To expand our celebration, we will also have an exhibit in the Fireside Room of the Library from March 8 to March 22. We are looking for a couple more lap quilts, and 4 or so wall hangings. If you have one you would like displayed, again, contact Beth. Thanks for your help in showcasing quilting in Hot Springs.

Casper Trip:

We plan to travel on March 4 (snow date April 1), leaving United Churches parking lot at 7 am. We currently have 2 cars going. We should arrive at the Nic in Casper around 10-10:30. That gives us 3/4 to 1 hour to get settled and look around. The curator Lisa, has been asked to give us a short presentation about the exhibit around 11:15.

We will order sandwiches from Grant Street and partake of the Nic at Noon program. We then have some more time to return to the exhibit, or other exhibits, the gift shop or... We plan to depart Casper 4ish to be back in Hot Springs 7ish...

Beth also made up and handed out this years Calendar Bookmarks. Beth reminded that the 2011 Centennial Block Harvest are to be 14 1/2" in size with the center measuring 12".

Pat mentioned that the Round Robin challenge for 2011 sign up sheet and instructions were being passed around. Pat showed the finished center block which needs to be completed by the February meeting. At that time groups will be assigned.

Beth also handed out a reminder for Show and Tell as follows:

We are going to continue 2010's practice of "awarding" year end prizes based upon the number of items you present in the "Show" portion of Show and Tell. So just a friendly reminder: Items to be shown should either be finished- with sleeve and label attached- OR-
items that are leaving your hands. By this we mean blocks going to another quilter, an item nearly finished but being given away before the next meeting, blocks being sent to a competition... The "Tell" segment is for sharing information about anything you would like to share. This is where you could "tell" us about the neat website with free patterns; and, if you show an example of this, the item should reappear when it is finished. Again, we will take our numbers from the Show and Tell list printed in the Minutes so be sure to list your items.

COMMITTEE REPORTS: CITH: Thanks are given to Julie, Cheryl and Laurna for all their hard work.

Audit Report: Karen, Stacy and Deloris reported that the Audit had been done and signed off except for Stacy, and Stacy would be signing it off at the conclusion of tonight’s meeting.

Dues: Dues are $15.00 for the year and are due now.

2. Elaine announced that the S.D. Quilters Guild Newsletter was received and it will be in the Library.

NEXT TIME
Thursday, February 10, 7:00 p.m. Regular monthly business meeting. Don’t forget to come and socialize and work on a project anytime after 5:00 P.M. Bring a sack lunch.

Saturday, February 5, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Beth will be teaching how to do the Scrappy Heart Quilt (see supply list in this newsletter) or you may bring a project of your own to work on. Remember to bring a potluck dish to share.

Tips: When sewing on the binding of a quilt. Make your binding, roll it up (making sure the end is out that you will stitch down 1st) and put it in a large zip-lock bag. Seal the bag up leaving the opening just big enough for the binding to flow through. Then as you move the quilt or if it falls your binding does not get tangled up.

A note from the President:

As you may remember we are planning to have a special display of “Block Drawing” quilts at the 2011 Christmas in the Hills show. In order that recipients have adequate time to complete these quilts we have set a deadline of the March meeting for blocks to be completed. If you owe a block for any drawing in 2009 or 2010 please have it completed for the recipient by then. We are looking forward to seeing all these wonderful quilts on display!
