MINNEKAHTA QUILTERS GUILD MINUTES
May 13, 2010
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:01 PM. There were 28 members present. One guest was introduced: Valorie Johnson.
MINUTES: Judy moved to approve the minutes from the April 8, 2010 meeting and Cora seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Delores presented the financial report. The current balance is $3,930.20. Income this past month was $30 from 2010 dues (2 memberships). Expense paid this past month was $10.60 to High Plains Graphics for printing of the membership list. No discussion. Treasurers report was approved as presented.
Delores reminded members that she has copies of the membership list if they would like one. Delores also has the order for Fons and Porter renewals.
OTHER OFFICER REPORTS:
VP: Ginny hung quilts provided by Elaine A., Pat S, and Caroline. Next month’s quilts will be provided by Elaine and Delores. Ginny will find a third quilt to be hung.
Librarian: Carolyn reported that Ellen Schwartz has donated 15 books to the library. They are on the back table and are available to be checked out. Carolyn passed around two magazines.
Historian: There was no historian’s report.
Program: Joan is still working on the name tag project, which will be presented at a later meeting.
Beth asked that members bring one of their first quilts to the June meeting. This will allow for beginner quilters to see how everyone started out, and the progress that is made in the years to follow.
June 11 through 13 is the Black Hills Quilt Guild Show in Rapid City. No further entries are being accepted. Judy reported that there have been over 400 quilts entered in this year’s show. Jan M. informed members that Rebecca Smith has offered a $1 off entry if there are a group of guild members that are going to the show. COMMITTEE REPORTS:
2010 CITH Raffle Quilt: The hand quilting on the frame is close to being completed. It will then be taken off the frame and the border of children will be hand quilted. All are invited to help with this. Volunteers to quilt the children are needed.
2011 CITH Raffle Quilt: The current program committee is chairing this quilt. More blocks are still needed. If you are interested in a demonstration on making this block, let one of the program committee members know.
OLD BUSINESS:
Garden Walk:
This is scheduled for June 26 from 9:30 AM until 2 PM. There are five gardens scheduled for the walk. Each garden will need to have to guild members available. Beth passed around a sign-up sheet for those who want to display quilts and for those who would like to volunteer to be in the gardens with the quilts. Those signing up for the first time slots will help hang the quilts, and those in the last time slot will help take down the quilts. We will be able to sell tickets for our 2010 raffle quilt, as well as provide information on the guild.
Fall River County Fair: Karen asked that members start bringing items for the Best of Show Basket in June. Items suggested were fat quarters, needles, thread, pins and other quilting notions. Karen will provide the basket.
Hot Springs Fall Heritage Festival: This event is scheduled for September 17 through 19. Beth will lead a discussion on this activity at a later guild meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Some guild members have been talking about the need for more time to socialize with one another, while quilting. Jan W. made a motion that prior (after 5 PM) to the business meeting at 7 PM on the 2nd Thursday of each month, members get together for a sack supper, quilting and socializing. Anne seconded the motion.
Discussed was whether or not the by-laws would need to be amended to include this. Current by-laws state that there is a monthly meeting, run according to Robert’s Rules of Order. The proposed motion would allow for the business meeting to be called to order at 7 PM. Many times only a very brief business meeting is needed, and then activities could resume.
The Block of the Month drawing and Show and Tell would continue, but would be held once the business meeting was adjourned. After discussion, the motion was put to a vote. Unanimous approval.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Be thinking about what you might want to enter in the County Fair. Don’t forget the challenge quilt. Karen hopes to have a description of the quilt categories at the next meeting.
2. Heart Song Quilts will be hosting their monthly Coffee Club on Saturday, May 15. This month’s project is a potholder. There will be a variety of coffees served.
3. Mary Sue has an oriental wall hanging kit, and fusible fabric to give away. If interested see her at the end of the meeting.
4. Guild Blog/Email site: Be sure to check each month for any changes. Address is http://minnekahtaquiltguild.blogspot.com.
NEXT BUSINESS MEETING: The next business meeting is June 10, 2010 at 7 PM.
Come early (after 5 PM) and enjoy fellowship with others, and work on a project.

BLOCK DRAWING: Elaine Anderson won the block drawing. She has chosen barns as her theme. Blocks are to be 12 ½ unfinished, and there is no color preference.
PROGRAM: Helen Spitzer presented a program on “One Block Wonders”.
Ann demonstrated a new product from the store which is used to fuse your small pieces of batting together.

Tips: Eliminate some hand sewing by adding a sleeve to the back of the quilt at the same time as the binding. Cut an 8” piece of fabric the same width as the quilt, hem the ends, and press in half with the wrong sides together. Pin the strip at the top of the back of the quilt, matching the raw edges of the sleeve with the raw edge of the quilt, and add the binding. Tack the bottom edge of the sleeve to the back of the quilt by hand.

MINNEKAHTA QUILTERS GUILD MINUTES
April 8, 2010
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 7 PM. There were 30 members present, with one returning guest (Julie Hyde).
MINUTES: Ginny moved to approve the minutes from the March 11, 2010 meeting and Sandy seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Delores presented the financial report. The current balance is $3,910.80. Income this past month was $105 from 2010 dues (7 memberships), and $40 for 2 Fons & Porter renewals. Expenses paid this past month were $30 for 2 Fons & Porter renewals. Pearl moved to accept the treasurer’s report as read, and Julie seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
Delores handed out the membership list for 2010. There were some additions to the list since it was written. Those were announced.
COMMUNICATIONS: Caroline read a thank-you note from Ruth Angerhofer.
OTHER OFFICER REPORTS:
VP: Ginny passed around the sign-up sheet for those wishing to display their quilts each month at the State Home. Ginny will provide all those volunteers with a copy of the list, so they know which month they are to bring a quilt for hanging. Quilts for May will be brought by Caroline, Elaine, and Pat S.
Librarian: Carolyn reported that there is a new quilter’s magazine in the library. She also passed around the order forms.
Historian: Helen had no report.
Program: Beth reminded guild members of the County Fair Quilt Challenge. The theme is “The Fair..est of Them All. Quilts are to be not smaller than 84 inches in perimeter and no larger than 120 inches in perimeter.
Black Hills Quilt Show: Beth informed the members that there was an article in the Rapid City Journal regarding the Black Hills Quilt Show. It will be held June 11, 12, and 13. The show accepts entries from all quilters. If you are interested in displaying a quilt, registration information can be found at area quilt and sewing shops, and on the guild’s web site, www.blackhillsquilters.org. Or you may also contact the exhibit coordinator, Carol Doyle, at 342-4126.
Beth reported that Patty Stanley is opening a coffee shop in the Pioneer Building (across from
Robb’s). Patty wants to display the work of local artists in her shop. If you are interested there is a meeting at the Pioneer Building at 4 PM on Saturday, April 10, or you may call Patty at 745-3989.
April 10 Work Day: This will be a work on your own day, or you may want to work on charity quilts. There is also the Million Pillowcase Challenge, and you may want to work on pillowcases on that day. Beth will provide the instructions on that day. Also, there will be guild members available to help with the making of blocks for the 2011 raffle quilt, using the tri-rec tools. Don’t forget to bring a potluck dish.

2011 CITH Raffle Quilt: The current program committee is chairing this quilt. More blocks are still needed. There will be someone at the April 10 workday to help you with your squares.

This event will be September 18th, and the organizers approached Beth about our participation. The idea would be to have quilters on the porch of the Evans working on quilt projects. This would be an opportunity to display some quilts, but would not be a full blown show. Karen moved that the guild participate in this event, and Jan M. seconded the motion. Discussion was that the details would be determined later. Passed unanimously.
Fall River County Fair: Karen indicated that the quilt categories would remain the same as last year, with the addition of the challenge quilt. Guild members seemed to agree that these categories were sufficient. The county fair is August 5, 6, and 7, with the quilts being hung on August 5. Karen reminded members that the guild would be putting together the basket for the Best in Show winner. Please bring items for this basket to the July meeting.

Supply List for Scrappy Star: 1] 12 -- 12 inch squares of 12 different fabrics: 6 fabrics of one color and 6 of another. They should have good contrast so the star is not lost [unless you are going for subtlety]. While they do not need to be exactly 12 inches square they can be no less than 12 inches square.
2] Freezer paper--enough for 2-- 12 inch squares and marker
3] mat and rotary cutter
4] 9 1/2 inch square up ruler is a good idea...
5] a ruler at least 18" long--any width ok
6] sewing machine, thread, pins etc.
7} The pattern recommends small labels but masking tape works just fine...
This set up makes 12 blocks and they finish 9" square. These 12 blocks will make a crib size quilt if you add borders. If you want to add borders you will need approximately 1/4 yd for an inner border and 2/3 yard for an outer border.
Tips: As tempting as it may be to jump right in and cut all the pieces of a quilt at once, slow down and make a sample block first to check that you really like the colors as much as you thought you would and that the sizing of your pattern pieces is correct. Adjusting patterns is much easier than trying to fix cut patches.

Supply List for Scrappy Star: 1] 12 -- 12 inch squares of 12 different fabrics: 6 fabrics of one color and 6 of another. They should have good contrast so the star is not lost [unless you are going for subtlety]. While they do not need to be exactly 12 inches square they can be no less than 12 inches square.
2] Freezer paper--enough for 2-- 12 inch squares and marker
3] mat and rotary cutter
4] 9 1/2 inch square up ruler is a good idea...
5] a ruler at least 18" long--any width ok
6] sewing machine, thread, pins etc.
7} The pattern recommends small labels but masking tape works just fine...
This set up makes 12 blocks and they finish 9" square. These 12 blocks will make a crib size quilt if you add borders. If you want to add borders you will need approximately 1/4 yd for an inner border and 2/3 yard for an outer border.
Tips: As tempting as it may be to jump right in and cut all the pieces of a quilt at once, slow down and make a sample block first to check that you really like the colors as much as you thought you would and that the sizing of your pattern pieces is correct. Adjusting patterns is much easier than trying to fix cut patches.
