MINNEKAHTA QUILTER’S GUILD—June 12, 2008
CALL TO ORDER: President Julie Standen called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Twenty-four members were present with two guests: Raelynn Bodell, friend of Joan Nettinga, and Jan Sears, a quilt appraiser and guest of Nancy Cuckler.
MINUTES: Minutes of the May 8, 2008, meeting were approved.
TREASURER: The ending balance for this month is $2534.58. Expenses included quilt clips at $16.82, Judy Yocum class fee at $130.00, and program expenses, including lodging, at $102.59.
LIBRARIAN: The most recent AQS order just arrived, including Helen’s Print and Use CD for the library. The guild received a $25.00 certificate from the AQS dividend program. AQS dues need to be paid. The AQS order forms and sales list were routed for members.
HISTORIAN: no report
PROGRAM:
The MACHINE APPLIQUE class taught by Judy Yocum was held May 31. It was an intensive, worthwhile class.
The next Quilt Block Giveaway will be held at the July 10th meeting. The theme will be “Fruits or Vegetables” and blocks should measure 12 ½ inches unfinished.
The June work day will be June 21 due to another event scheduled at the State Home on June 7.
The July work day has been rescheduled from July 5 to July 19 due to the Fourth of July holiday.
Grid Round Robin: Members participating in the round robin passed their bags on to the next person on each team. The grids will be returned to the original owners at the July meeting.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
NEWSLETTER: Karen Meston asked that you let her know if you’d like to get the newsletter via e-mail.
2008 CITH Raffle Quilt: Pat Scheltens displayed the finished quilt and thanked all of those who helped. The quilt will be displayed at the Summer Stitchin’ retreat at the end of June.
2009 CITH Raffle Quilt: Julie reported all rows have been completed and the flying geese for the borders have been made. We will work on the quilt at the Summer Stitchin’ retreat.
2008 Summer Stitchin’: Summer Stitchin’ at Arts in the Park will be held on Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, at the United Churches Fellowship Hall. The retreat will include quilt displays and a chance for quilters to work on their own projects. The show/retreat will be open on Friday from 12:00 – 5:00 and on Saturday from 9:00 – 2:00. There will be a $2.00 admission charge for the quilters’ tea and trunk show which will be held Friday evening at 7:00.
Members continued to sign up to help at the retreat and trunk show. Members gave their completed descriptions for the trunk show to Marilyn Rowley. If you weren’t at the meeting, please get those forms to Marilyn as soon as possible.
Please bring baked goods to the church by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 27. Servers should be there at 6:00 p.m. to help set up the tables. Quiltwalkers should be there by 6:30 p.m. There will be a quilting demonstration in the Arts in the Park on Saturday, June 28.
MJ Varick will be in charge of a quilter’s tools table at the retreat. Members suggested items which should be displayed.
Beth Mazzella displayed the center for the 125th birthday quilt. Guild members signed a block for the Minnekahta Quilters’ Guild. If the quilt is finished in time, it could be displayed at the Fall River County Fair in the group quilt category.
Julie encouraged all members to participate in the retreat in some manner. Quilts may be dropped off at the homes of Sheryl Brost, Beth Mazzella, or Bobbie Augustine, or brought to the church between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. on Friday.
The committee will meet on June 21 at 9:00 A.M. at the State Home to finalize plans.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Please let Helen know if you have quilts to hang, as we need three each month. Quilts are needed for July.
2. The Black Hills Quilts Guild Show will be June 13, 14, and 15. The hours on Friday and Saturday will be 9-5; on Sunday, 10-4. Admission is $5.00. The website is www.blackhillsquilter.org .
3. QuiltNebraska will be held at Chadron State College July 24-27, 2008. More information on classes and events can be found at http://nsqg.org/qn .
4. Quilt Corral Too will be sponsoring a show in Hill City at the Mistletoe Ranch on September 14. The website is http://www.quiltcorral.com and the e-mail address is quiltcorraltoo@ll.net .
5. Nancy reported that the Powers plan to move in July and hope to open HeartSong Quilts by the first of September.
6. Dakota Cabin Quilts is sponsoring a group table runner of the month project. For more information, go to their website at www.dakotacabinquilts.com .
OLD BUSINESS:
Ginny Coates, Cora Fugier, and the Tuesday morning group have completed the band banner. It was used in the Miss South Dakota parade June 7.
Karen reminded members to bring fat quarters or notions by the July meeting for the Best of Show prize at the Fall River County Fair. MJ has been helping to contact awards sponsors. The fairbook deadline is June 13. New categories will include bags, quilted wearables, and group quilts. Members need to think about what they want to show at the Fair. Nancy and MJ both agreed to be drop-off points for quilts. Volunteers will be needed to help hang and take down quilts. Be sure to label any bags containing quilts; be sure to cover the label on the quilt so that the judge can’t see the name; be sure to read the book carefully to select the correct lot and category for each item.
NEW BUSINESS:
Sue Cleland spoke about the possibility of creating a website for the guild. Jan Weisser moved and Dorothy Denison seconded to have Sue investigate various options and report at the next meeting.
Marilyn distributed preliminary information about a possible trip to Des Moines, Iowa, for the AQS show there in October.
NEXT MEETING: The next business meeting will be July 10 at 7 pm.
NEXT WORKDAY: The June workday will be June 21.

It was good to be back in Hot Springs and take in the quilt show and Art in the Park, just wish I could have seen more of the quilters but time was short. The quilt show was great. Elaine Staben
