MINNEKAHTA QUILTERS GUILD MINUTES
March 11, 2010
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:04 PM. Pending the completion of name tags, guild members introduced themselves. There were 29 members present. Guests were introduced: Julie and Jean Hyde.
MINUTES: Pearl moved to approve the minutes from the February 11, 2010 meeting and Pat S. seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Delores presented the financial report. The current balance is $3,795.80. Income this past month was $105 from 2010 dues (7 memberships). No expenses were paid out this month. Beth moved to accept the treasurer’s report as read, and Joan seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
OTHER OFFICER REPORTS:
VP: Ginny will take over hanging the quilts each month as a vice-presidential duty. She passed around a sign-up sheet for members to indicate which month they would bring a quilt for hanging. This month, Nancy Cuckler brought three quilts to hang.
Librarian: Carolyn passed around the list of books that are for sale, and explained how to order.
Historian: Helen had no report.
Program: Beth presented information on the Challenge Quilt project that will be a part of the Fall River County Fair in August. This will be a wall hanging, with the theme of “the Fair-est of Them All”. The minimum size is 84 inches in perimeter, with the maximum size of 120 inches in perimeter. The quilt may be any medium, but must meet the definition of “quilt” according to Division V, Class G of the fair book. The project must be completed and ready to hang at the County Fair on August 5, 2010.
March 20, 2010 is National Quilting Day. The program committee has arranged for a beginning quilt class to be done at the State Home on that date. Several guild members have volunteered to be mentors and help the new quilters. Joan showed the project that will be made. Joan encouraged all guild members to come (even if not mentoring) and work on their own projects. Be sure to bring a potluck item.
The April work day is April 10, and the program committee anticipates being ready to work on the name tags at that meeting.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
2010 CITH Raffle Quilt: Good progress continues to be made on the 2010 raffle quilt (“Peace Together”). This is a nine patch, with children around the edge and is being hand quilted. Everyone is encouraged to give hand quilting a try. The 9 AM Tuesday morning group is working on this. There is usually a small group that meets Wednesday afternoons at 4 PM to quilt. Let Sandy or Karen know if you are planning on coming on Wednesday afternoon. All members are encouraged to go up on stage and look at the progress being made.
2011 CITH Raffle Quilt: The current program committee is chairing this quilt. Those attending the March workday were introduced to the block that is going to make up the 2011 raffle quilt. It will be a Christmas quilt, and will use the tri-recs tool. Joan stated that Heart Song Quilt will be getting in that tool. The size of the quilt will be determined later, and the size will determine the number of blocks needed.
OLD BUSINESS:
Storage Room: Elaine reminded guild members that we do have storage at the State Home, and if you are currently storing guild items at your home, please contact Elaine to make arrangements to store the items at the State Home.
Summer Quilt Program: Beth stated that the HS Arts Committee’s continues to meet to discuss the garden walk and whether or not they want to show quilts in conjunction with the walk. There is no definite information at this time, but Beth hopes to have definite information by the April meeting.
No decision has been made regarding the guilds participation in the Main Street Arts and Crafts show in June. Elaine stated that a decision would need to be made by the guild regarding both summer programs at the April meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Elaine asked for new business and there was none.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Let Ginny know if you have quilts to hang. We need three each month.
2. The latest South Dakota Quilters’ Newsletter is in the guild library for anyone who would like to read it.

NEXT WORKDAY: March 20, 2010 is National Quilting Day and we will host beginning quilters, as well as work on your own projects. Bring a potluck item April 10, 2010 will be the next work day.

BLOCK DRAWING: The January block drawing winner was Sherry Nusbaum. She has selected a 12 ½ inch unfinished block with “joy” and/or flowers as the theme. She requests a pink background.
The March block drawing was won by Marilyn who has chosen a basket theme. She asked that the blocks be 12 ½ inches unfinished, using spring colors on a cream/ivory background. The baskets are to be on point on the square.
PRESENTATION: Beth’s presentation was on thinking creatively. She provided a number of ideas regarding creativity and how these might apply to the County Fair Challenge Quilt.

Tips: Eliminate some hand sewing by adding a sleeve to the back of the quilt at the same time as the binding. Cut an 8” piece of fabric the same width as the quilt, hem the ends, and press in half with the wrong sides together. Pin the strip at the top of the back of the quilt, matching the raw edges of the sleeve with the raw edge of the quilt, and add the binding. Tack the bottom edge of the sleeve.

February Newsletter
MINNEKAHTA QUILTERS GUILD MINUTES
February 11, 2010
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. There were 26 members present. Three new members were introduced: Audrey Pittman; Marcia Jackson; and Mary Sue Waxler.
MINUTES: Laurna moved to approve the minutes from the January 14, 2010 meeting and Pat C. seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Delores presented the financial report. The current balance is $3,690.80. Income this past month was $390 from 2010 dues (26 memberships). Expenses were: $800 to the State Veterans’ Home; $5 membership dues refund to Gloria Korrell; and $20 for SD Quilt Guild dues. Joan moved to accept the treasurer’s report as read, and Judy seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
LIBRARIAN: Carolyn passed around the new AQ magazine and order information. There are quilt magazines on the table for give away. There are a couple newly donated quilt books that will be put in the library and may be checked out.
HISTORIAN: Helen will accept any pictures or memorabilia.
PROGRAM: Block of the Month: The block of the month will continue this year. If you choose to participate, you are expected to make a block each month. Those who choose not to participate are welcome to make a block, but are not eligible to win.
Name Tags: The program committee will provide instructions for making name tags prior to the March work day. On the March work day, those attending can make their name tag. Otherwise, make them at home. They will be a bag style, with your name on the flap. The program committee will provide the name fabric and the neck cord. Each member will need to provide a quarter of a yard of fabric of their choice for the bag. The mammoth will be used as the logo. A sample of the name bag was passed around, along with two examples of mammoth pins. Let Laurna know which pin style you would like. She will purchase these and each member will need to reimburse her for that purchase. The name tags are to be worn at each guild meeting, and if a member forgets to wear her/his name tag, there will be a jar in which you will have to pay a fine of a quarter.
National Quilting Day: National Quilting Day is March 20. The State Home auditorium will be available to guild members on that day. The program committee will be offering a basic beginner’s quilt class on that date. An invitation will be in the newspaper and more information will be at the next guild meeting and at HeartSong.

The program committee announced that they would coordinate work days in April, May and June to work on the 2011 raffle quilt. Cindy spoke to the duties and responsibilities of the chair and encouraged members to volunteer for this. The chair decides the theme/design, colors, quilting method, etc. and the members carry out this decision. Nancy reminded members of the blocks she had donated to guild some time ago, and suggested that these might be used in the 2011 raffle quilt. After some discussion the program committee (Beth, Joan, Laurna and Cora) volunteered to chair the 2011 raffle quilt.
Volunteer to hang quilts: Elaine asked for a volunteer to coordinate hanging quilts at the State Home. Beth made a motion that the guild vice-president have the responsibility of coordinating hanging quilts each month at the State Home. Cindy seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.

Members are asked to think about whether or not we would like to participate. Beth reported that there had been some discussion that quilts be displayed as part of the HS Arts Committee Garden Walk on June 19. There will be more details and discussion of both topics at our March meeting. Come prepared with ideas for discussion.
