July 2008 Newsletter

MINNEKAHTA QUILTER’S GUILD—July 10, 2008

CALL TO ORDER: President Julie Standen called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Twenty-nine members were present with two guests: Laurna Nelson, guest of Ann Powers, and Tootsie, guest of Deb Winter.

MINUTES: Minutes of the June 12, 2008, meeting were approved.

TREASURER: The ending balance for this month is $2315.48. Income included Quiltfest admissions at $45.00. Expenses included Julie Standen, Quiltfest supplies at $43.87; Ginny Coates, Hot Springs High School Band Banner at $31.18; United Churches, Donation for use of Fellowship Hall for Quiltfest at $50.00; Pat Scheltens, reimbursement for 2008 raffle quilt quilting at $114.05; and Jan Weisser, American Quilters Society dues reimbursement at $25.00.

LIBRARIAN: New additions to the library include Baskets and Flowers by Ricky Tims and Helen’s Print and Use CD. Sandi donated Applique with Folded Cutwork and Heartland Zoo Babies. Margaret donated Perfect Piecing. The AQS order forms and sales list were routed for members.

HISTORIAN: no report

PROGRAM:

The “Fruits or Vegetables” Quilt Block Giveaway will be held tonight.
The pattern for the third Block of the Quarter was distributed. Christa’s sample was displayed.
The July work day will be July 19. Lunch will be potluck
The August work day will be August 2. This is during the Fall River Fair but the auditorium will be available for quilters who which to work on their own projects.
The next Quilt Block Giveaway will be held at the September meeting. Blocks are to be blue and white snowflakes and should measure 12 and ½ inches unfinished.
Christa has been using the newsletter to keep the UFO list updated. Call or email her if you have questions about your progress.
The Round Robin Reveal was held with the last person to work on the top displaying the project and then returning the top to the original owner. It is now up to the owner to decide how to finish the project. It is hoped that these will be ready to display at Christmas in the Hills.


COMMITTEE REPORTS:

NEWSLETTER: no report
2008 CITH Raffle Quilt: Helen will bring the raffle tickets to the August meeting. Sue will take a photo of the quilt for members to show when selling tickets. Ann volunteered to be in charge of ticket sales. Sheryl currently has the quilt. It was decided not to sell raffle tickets at the Fall River County Fair.
2009 CITH Raffle Quilt: Sheryl reported that the committee worked on the quilt at Quiltfest: Summer Stitchin’. We are ready to add sashing and borders. Bev Carlson will machine quilt it.
2008 Summer Stitchin’: Summer Stitchin’ at Arts in the Park was held Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, at the United Churches Fellowship Hall. Marilyn thanked everyone who helped in any way with the event. The show was attended by 177 visitors. The trunk show Friday evening featured 44 quilts. Visitors enjoyed seeing quilters at work. Different suggestions for next year were discussed.
Signature Quilt: Beth Mazzella displayed both the center and the embroidered block for the 125th birthday quilt. Feedback regarding this project has been good and is creating goodwill for the guild in the community. There are several other groups whose signatures still need to be obtained. Curt at the Hot Springs Star has been very helpful with publicity for this project.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1. Please let Helen know if you have quilts to hang, as we need three each month. Quilts are needed for August.
2. QuiltNebraska will be held at Chadron State College July 24-27, 2008. More information on classes and events can be found at http://nsqg.org/qn .
3. Quilt Corral Too will be sponsoring a show in Hill City at the Mistletoe Ranch on September 14. The website is http://www.quiltcorral.com and the e-mail address is quiltcorraltoo@ll.net .
4. The Panhandle Quilters will be holding a quilt show in Scottsbluff on July 11-13 from 12:00 until 5:00 p.m.
5. The Custer Piecemakers Quilt Show will be held July 25 (10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.), July 26 (9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and July 27 (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) in the YMCA log building. Admission is $2.00.
6. Seasons of Stitches and Strokes is a shared exhibit of the Black Hills Quilters Guild and Black Hills Area Decorative Artists at the Journey Museum in Rapid City. The show will run until August 10. On July 15, quilters will be at work from 9:30 a.m. until noon.

OLD BUSINESS:

Beth reported on the Fall River County Fair. Quilts can be dropped off by July 30 at the homes of Nancy Cuckler or MJ Varick in Hot Springs and Bobbie Augustine in Edgemont. Quilts will be hung on July 31. That morning usually starts with coffee at Sturdleys at 8:00 with the carpool leaving for Edgemont about 9:00. They’ll start to hang quilts about 10:00, then have lunch, and then hang the remaining quilts. Quilts will be taken down on Saturday about 2:30. The Fairbook will be published in the Hot Springs Star and the Star Extra this Tuesday. Copies will also be available at the library and other sites. Read the categories carefully to be sure your quilt is entered in the correct category. Be sure to label any bags containing quilts; be sure to cover the label on the quilt so that the judge can’t see the name.
Sue Cleland has created the Minnekahta Quilters Guild website. It can be accessed at http://minnekahtaquiltguild.blogspot.com . The newsletter and photos are available there as well as other features.
Information about the American Quilters Society show in Des Moines in October can now be accessed through the AQS website.

NEW BUSINESS:

Ann reported that they have moved into the apartment now. The floors in the quilt shop are finished and merchandise is arriving. Interested guild members may make samples for display in the shop. She hopes to have the shop open in September.

NEXT MEETING: The next business meeting will be August 14 at 7 pm.

NEXT WORKDAY: The July workday will be July 19. The August workday will be August 2.
