Seal the bag up leaving the opening just big enough for the binding to flow through. Then as you move the quilt or if it falls your binding does not get tangled up.

Fabric requirements:
½ yard of background fabric (not fat quarters, you will want the width-of-fabric)
¼ yard of Fabric A (can be a fat quarter)
1/8 yard for Fabrics B, C and D (or fat quarters)
Though you won’t need them for class, the project takes ½ yard for backing and ¼ yard for binding to finish.
Since this is a mystery project and you’re giving up foresight for adventure, I will try to give you some direction for choosing your fabrics. This project isn’t one of those “your background has to be light” quilts. I’ve seen or done it in a variety of combinations and it looks great. That said, I would suggest choosing your fabrics in this manner:
Background: can be light, dark, small scale or a focal print. Just about anything goes so pick something you like, as this is the one you see the most of in your finished project.
Fabric A: should have good contrast to your background, small scale if a print.
Fabric B: this one should be the one that has the most contrast to all your fabrics and should be a solid or tonal print as the finished pieces are small.
Fabric C: should contrast well with A, can be tonal or small to medium scale print.
Fabric D: should have good contrast to A and B, tonal or small print.
A final note on selecting your fabrics: the fun is in the mystery, it only takes 1&1/8 yards of fabric and not much of a time investment. Worry about Iraq, global warming or swine flu, but relax about choosing your fabrics!
General sewing supplies needed: rotary cutter, mat and ruler, sewing machine that works and you know how to operate, cotton thread to blend with your fabrics, fine point pencil or permanent marker, scissors.
To complete your top in class, you will need to come with the following pre-cut:
Background fabric:
Cut 2) 2.25” x 40” strips
Cut 1) 9.5” x 40” strip from which you first cut a 9.5” square. Cut the square diagonally in quarters to make four triangles. Take the remainder of the
9.5”strip and trim to 6”, and cut the following: 3) 6” x 6” squares, 4) 2.5” x 6” rectangles, 4) 2.5” x 3” rectangles and 2) 2.5” squares.
Fabric A:
Cut 6) 3” x 3” squares; Cut 8) 1.25” x 20” strips
Fabric B:
Cut 4) 1.75” x 20” strips & then cut into 32) 1.75” x 1.75” squares
Fabric C:
Cut 4) 3” x 3” squares
Fabric D:
Cut 4) 1.5” x 20” strips

Press Release to Hot Springs Star
Here's the press release sent to the Hot Springs Star regarding the quilts we worked on for the Veteran's Home, the Sheriff's Dept. and Social Services. The pictures here are of those quilts and the presentation.
When you are frightened, or hurt, feeling alone and unsure, getting a loving hug or being wrapped in something soft and warm can be a welcome antidote. The Minnekahta Quilters’ Guild recently presented 13 quilted ‘hugs’ to organizations in the Hot Springs community. The SD State Veterans’ Home, represented by Randy Meyers, was the beneficiary of 4 quilts designated for veteran residents in the Men’s’ Home. At the same time, Fall River County Sheriff Jeff Tarrell accepted 5 quilts and stuffed toys for children who are in contact with his office. The SD Department of Social Services also received 4 quilts and toys for children in their care. Social Services was represented by Dena Harrod, Jenny Disher and her daughters Stormy and Nina at the Guild presentation.
Guild President Julie Standen said: “While the primary purpose of the guild is to promote quilting and educate our members, what better way to accomplish those goals than by sharing what we enjoy.” All the fabric and related materials were donated by members of the guild. Quilters sewed and shared in 3 work days plus countless hours at home putting together blocks and quilting. Guild members had not only the fun of sewing, they learned and tried new ideas, laughed a lot, and build stronger friendships which made these gifts truly antidotes to hard times.
The Guild meets monthly, the second Thursday of each month, at 7 pm, in the auditorium of the State Veterans Home. Quilters, those interested in or wanting to learn to quilt are welcome to join them.

August Newsletter 09
August 13, 2009
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Julie Standen called the meeting to order at 7 PM. There were 28 members present. Ann introduced her guest: Jesse Powers.
MINUTES: Laurna moved to approve the minutes from the July 9, 2009 meeting, with the motion being seconded. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Delores presented the financial report. The current balance is $2,658.10. Income this past month was $124.50, and expenses were $240.06.
Finances: Delores Hagman inquired as why there is so much money in the guild’s treasury. Karen explained why the balance is maintained at the level it is…to avoid a situation similar to a few years ago, where the treasury had no funds. Also, a portion of the funds currently in the treasury are actually from the sales of raffle tickets, and will be used toward the 2010 guild programs.
LIBRARIAN: Jan stated that she has been working on re-arranging the library. It is not sorted by category, author and title. The contents of the library are listed alphabetically, by title, in a notebook. When checking out a book, pull the card from the book, sign your name to it, and place the card in the blue box. When you return the book, take the card from the blue box and put it back in the book. The guild thanked Jan for her hard work.
Jan then passed around the order forms for the new books.
HISTORIAN: There was no historian report. Helen stated that she will need three quilts to hang next month.
PROGRAM: Sue reviewed the list of class recommendations submitted by guild members and sought clarification about some of the names listed as potential teachers.
July 18 Leaf Shadow Class: Bobbie reported that this class went well. She handed out the instructions used for the class. These are a more accurate revision of the instructions given out the day of the class.
October Mystery Table Runner Class: Joan handed out the supply list for this project, and passed around the sign-up sheet. The class will be on October 3. Joan will be teaching the class, and she stated that if we come to the class with our fabrics pre-cut, we should go home with a finished project. The class will start at 9 AM. Be sure to bring a pot luck item.
UFOs: Cora asked guild members to get with her after the meeting, so she can make sure that all completed UFO’s have been marked off. All UFOs need to be completed and presented by the November meeting. If you have not completed your UFOs by the November meeting, bring to the meeting a fat quarter for each UFO not completed. The fat quarters will be distributed during the December meeting.
Challenge Quilt: The challenge quilts should be done by the November meeting. They will then be displayed at the quilt show during Christmas in the Hills. The “People’s Choice” award at the show will be selected from the challenge quilts.
Christmas Fat Quarters: Fat quarters will not be given out out as gifts to guild members during the Christmas party this year. Rather, bring an unwanted UFO, (wrapped) to the party, and there will be a UFO gift exchange. Make it pretty so someone will want it!!
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
2009 CITH Raffle Quilt: The raffle quilt is currently on display at the Quilt Shop in Custer. It will be there until the end of August. If anyone happens to be in Custer toward the end of the month please collect it and bring it back to town so it can go to another location next month.
2010 CITH Raffle Quilt: Beth stated that the 2010 raffle quilt will go on the frame after August 22. The Tuesday morning group, and any others who wish, will be quilting on it. Just be sure to check the State Home auditorium for availability. Beth showed the quilt top made from the left over nine patches. This quilt will go on the frame after the raffle quilt is done. The guild will need to discuss, at a later date, what will be done with this quilt once it is completed.
OLD BUSINESS:
Update By-Laws: The by-law revisions have been completed and passed by the guild. Copies have been made, and each member is encouraged to pick up a copy after tonight’s meeting. Extra copies will be kept in the library so they are available to new members.
Operating Guidelines: Julie is looking for volunteers to help put together operating guidelines. This document would outline what officers and committee members (i.e. CITH; County Fairs; etc.) do and how they do it. Stacy and Beth volunteered to help collect this information. They do request that the information be sent to them in word documents so it will be easy to consolidate the information.
Guild Flyer: Ann and Brian are working on these. Joan has volunteered to help with project. Ann will bring some ideas to the next meeting. It would nice to have the flyers ready by CITH.
NEW BUSINESS:
County Fair: The fair is over, and pictures of the winners are on the guild’s blog. Karen has emailed a report on the winners to all the members. Karen reported that there were over 60 entries. There were no youth entries for the second year in a row. Karen suggested that we think of ways to involve the youth, through 4-H, in quilting.
Charity Quilts: On the September 12 work day, we will be working on charity quilts. At the September meeting, Beth will be presenting the completed charity quilts to the State Home and the Sheriff’s Office. NOTE: in September the work day will be after the monthly meeting.
Hot Springs Heritage Festival: This is sponsored by the Hot Springs Chamber Arts Committee and will be September 18, 19, and 20. It replaces the Artoberfest Art Walk. The goal of this festival is to recreate the early 1900’s. Businesses in town will be doing something related to that era. Brian Powers, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce approached Julie with the idea of guild members having period quilts on display at HeartSong during this time. He suggested older quilts similar to those displayed earlier this summer when we had a small showing of quilts from the 30-40s. This would not be a show, just a display. Also, some of our hand-quilters may want to be in the shop demonstrating their talents. If interested, have your quilts to the shop by September 17.
Edgemont OctoberFest: Julie will call Lynda Anderson to inquire if Edgemont is planning this event for this Fall, and if they would like our guild to participate. It also might be a good opportunity to display our raffle quilt and sell tickets.
Name Tags: Beth suggested that name tags, for members, could be something that would be helpful in getting to know each other, as well as helping new members get to know members. Julie will put this suggestion to the program committee for consideration.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Let Helen know if you have a quilt to display at the State Home.
2. Beth has re-cycled plastic containers on the back table. These make good project containers, and storage for other items. Take some home with you, if you are interested.
3. Guild Blog/Email site: Be sure to check each month for any changes. Address is http://minnekahtaquiltguild.blogspot.com.
4. Hill City Outdoor Quilt Show and Sale: The Hill City businesses are sponsoring a quilt show on Sunday, September 13 from 9 AM until 4 PM. Informational brochures will be dropped off at Heart Song. On Monday and Tuesday, following the show there will be a quilt class. There is more information at their website, www.hillcityquiltshow.com.
5. Arlene announced that Jan Sears will be at the Hill City quilt show and will be available to appraise quilts.
6. Elections of Officers in October: Julie reminded the guild that soon a nominating committee will be put together and will be asking guild members to fill officer positions, as well as the program committee. Please give some thought to filling one of these positions when asked. It takes the help of many people to keep a guild functional. We are all busy people, but if we want to continue having an active and fun guild, we need you to be willing to help. Don’t be afraid to try. Officers from previous years are available and willing to help. Please consider volunteering if you get a call from the Nominating Committee!
NEXT BUSINESS MEETING: The next business meeting will be September 10 at 7 PM. Note that this is before the September workday.
NEXT WORKDAY: September 12; Charity Quilt work day.
ADJOURN: Meeting was adjourned at 8 PM.
BLOCK DRAWING: Judy Gifford won the block drawing and has chosen flowers as her theme. Judy would like these to be on a cream colored background, and 12-1/2 inches square.

July 2009 Newsletter
July 9, 2009
CALL TO ORDER: President Julie Standen called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Thirty-one members were present with three guests. Guests were Mary Hardy, guest of Jan Weisser; Joann Phillips, a former member; and Maci Green, granddaughter of Shirley Green.
MINUTES: Minutes of the June 11, 2009, meeting were approved.
TREASURER: The ending balance for this month is $2773.66 with income from raffle tickets of $161.00 deposited and no bills. Members were reminded that monies from ticket sales can be turned in as soon as packets are sold. Delores now has the extra raffle tickets. See her for information on Fons and Porter magazine subscriptions.
LIBRARIAN: The order list for AQS books was circulated. Jan and Julie cleaned out the library and storage cabinet. They don’t want to offend anyone who might have donated items, but we are running out of space in the library. Items are on the back table for members to take; if no one wants them tonight, they will be circular filed. Jan will try to organize books by categories.
HISTORIAN: No Report.
PROGRAM:
Joan Nettinga reported on ABC Quilts. This group was founded in 1988 and has distributed over half a million quilts to at-risk babies and children. More information can be found at the americanmothers.org website, including links to specifics for quilts.
Sue Cleland reminded everyone to continue working on the challenge quilts using the pattern from Fons and Porter. These quilts will be displayed at CITH where viewers will vote on their favorite. A Mystery wall hanging class will be held in October. She also circulated the class survey form again.
Bobbie Augustine reported that the Leaf Shadow class to be held July 18 has four openings. Those taking the class need to wear old clothes. The black fabric and Steam-a-Seam needed for the class will be available that day for $2.25 a yard.
Beth Mazzella reported on the June 13 work day. Lunch items related to quilt blocks and they had a great time making charity quilts. They used up most of the donated blocks but still have strips to use. Fifteen quilts are ready to go. Beth will invite representatives from the State Home, the Sheriff’s department, and Social Services to the August meeting for the quilt distribution. Anne Powers added that she has plastic bags donated by Pat Holwell to use to store these quilts.
The August 1 workday will be a work on your own day. It also will be the takedown day at the County Fair.
The September 12 workday will be another workday for charity quilts or a work on your own day.
RAFFLE QUILT 2009: Karen Meston reported that most people sold their own tickets during Arts in the Park, but there was $31.00 from common tickets sold. Bobbie will now take the quilt to Edgemont for display either at Nuts and Bolts quilt shop or at the bank. Julie reminded members that there is no requirement to sell raffle tickets; however, everyone is encouraged to try to sell at least one packet since this is what supports the guild’s teaching activities and the donation to the State Home.
RAFFLE QUILT 2010: Beth Mazzella displayed the finished quilt top for “Peace Together.” The quilt is king-sized (102 x 116). The backing, batting, and binding strips are ready. She also displayed the completed pillow. There are enough nine-patches left for almost a full-size top.
NEWSLETTER: no report
OLD BUSINESS:
The By-law committee consisting of Julie Standen, Cindy Reed, Ginny Coates, Marilyn Rowley, and Elaine Anderson met on June 16 to work on updating the by-laws. A proposed revision was sent to all members via e-mail. Cindy read the by-laws and reviewed the major changes. Members discussed the changes which included the release of membership lists on the internet, free membership for State Home residents, using a Program committee of three members with one member rotating off each year as a new member is added, and clarification of the audit committee. Karen Meston moved to adopt the by-laws as presented by the by-law committee; seconded by Jan Weisser; motion passed. Cindy has a final copy ready to be signed by the president and secretary. Hard copies will be distributed at the August meeting. The original documents should be kept in the secretary’s binder.
Karen Meston reported on the Fall River County Fair, July 29-August 1. The quilts will be hung on Thursday morning, July 30. A group will be going over about 9:00 a.m. after coffee at the All-Star Grill and will hang quilts in the morning, break for lunch, and finish hanging the final quilts by 3:00 that afternoon when the judging will begin. Items must be separated by lot and by class. Quilts may be dropped off at Nancy Cuckler’s home up until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29. Quilts delivered to the fairgrounds should be there by 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. If you send a quilt in a bag or container, be sure to put your name on that item. Be sure your entries are in the correct category and that your name and phone number are attached to the quilt. Take down will be on Saturday, August 1. If someone other than yourself will be picking up the quilt, be sure to let the committee know. Contact Karen to volunteer to hang quilts or take down quilts.
Fairbooks containing information about the various categories will be included in Tuesday’s paper. Karen will add her document to the newsletter e-mail. It will also be posted on the blog. If you have a question about the best category for your quilt, include the necessary information and the committee will be sure it gets into the best category. Prizes have been reorganized this year to better fit each category. Sally Park-Hageman makes arrangements for the quilt show judge. Elaine Anderson and Beth Mazzella have made ribbons and fabric tags for each category.
NEW BUSINESS:
Julie discussed the addition of operating guidelines. Operating guidelines tell how we do our guild business and are needed for continuity and to decrease errors and confusion. These would include exactly what each officer does, how to do the CITH show, how to manage raffle tickets and sales, how to set up for the County Fair, and how to do all the other activities of the guild. Committee members need to write down information about what they do so that all of the information can be consolidated into one document. Contact Julie if you want to help with this project.
The guild needs some type of flyer or bookmark to give to prospective members. This could be available at the quilt shops and distributed at CITH, the County Fair, and other guild activities. Cindy suggested members collect samples during travels this summer. Anne suggested the flyer include contact information so that guild members can then invite interested people to the meetings. Anne and Brian Powers will work on this. Beth will forward the information from the sign used at the Arts in the Park booth.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Please let Helen know if you have quilts to hang, as we need three each month.
2. The Piecemakers Quilt Show will be held in Custer Friday, July 24, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.; Saturday, July 25, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.; and Sunday, July 26, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The show is in the Grace Coolidge YMCA log building.
3. Guild blog/email site: Be sure to check each month for any changes. The address is http://minnekahtaquiltguild.blogspot.com .
4. Sue Kortum is doing well after chemo and is back at work in the shop.
5. Anne thanked Julie and Caroline for having their family shop at the store during their family reunion. She also brought bags of arugula for members to take home. There are still a couple of openings for the Strips and Curves class to be held Saturday, July 11. On Saturday, July 25, Ronnie Carnes of Carnes Knife Sharpening will be at the shop from 1:00 until 6:00. There will also be a variety of make and take projects available that day. NEXT MEETING: Next business meeting will be August 13 at 7 pm.
ADJOURN: Meeting was adjourned at 8:18 p.m.
BLOCK DRAWING: Stacey Martin won the block drawing. She requested a change in the block size. She would like members to make her 4 nine-patch blocks. The squares in the blocks should start at two inches square (one and a half inches finished). Batting and backing has also been donated. Beth reminded the guild to save the bags that bedding comes in, as they make great quilt storage. Remember to bring a picture of a quilt square that matches the potluck dish you bring.

Other displays sites for the raffle quilt were discussed. The sites include: the local hospital; the county fair; Nuts & Bolts in Edgemont; the Fall Festival in Edgemont; and Sue Kortum’s quilt shop in Custer.
Caroline has raffle tickets tonight. Please pick up a pack after the meeting. Julie encouraged everyone to try to sell some tickets, as this is how we fund classes and make our annual donation to the State Home.
2010 CITH Raffle Quilt: Beth showed the nine patch center, along with a partial border of the kids. The kids are due tonight. If you don’t have yours finished, get them to Beth as soon as possible. Get with Beth if you would like to help put the kids on the quilt.

OLD BUSINESS:
Update By-Laws: The by-law revision committee of Cindy, Julie, Marilyn, Elaine and Ginny will meet on Tuesday, June 16th. If you have any input to offer on the by-law revision, please let a committee member know. The proposed revisions will be presented to the guild, at the July meeting, for discussion and approval.
Black Hills Quilt Show June 5-7: A number of guild members went to the show. Cora reported that her daughter displayed a quilt that Cora had made, and the quilt was a People’s Choice winner.

Jan sent around the order forms for books. Julie brought in books and polyfil for give away and/or donation to the library.
HISTORIAN: There was no historian report. Helen stated that she had enough quilts to hang this next month.
PROGRAM: The April 4 Challenge Quilt work day was re-scheduled to May 2. Cora reported that 12 people took the class. Cora brought in copies of the challenge for any members who did not take the class. Cora also had a handout on how to make blocks in different sizes.
Service Project: Joan presented an idea that her friend from Phoenix did with her quilt group. It is a project that can be used by law enforcement or in shelters. The guild made tote bags, and filled them with coloring books and crayons. These would be handed out to children in shelters or when removed from homes, to give the children some projects/distractions from their situation.
The Block of the Month drawing will continue, and the winner will be drawn at the end of the meeting tonight. Be sure to be thinking of a theme, should your name be drawn.
Beth stated that the June 13 work day would be for working on more Charity Quilts. There are still a number of quilt tops, as well as strips, that need to be made into quilts. More batting is needed for these charity quilts. Several charity quilts from the last work day have been completed and are on display in the State Home auditorium. Two twin size quilts will be donated to the State Home, and some of the smaller ones will be donated to the Sheriff’s Department.
Sue spoke about the pot luck for the June 13 work day. To add a little fun to the potluck, those attending are invited to bring a picture of a quilt block pertaining to the food item they bring. Sue passed around list of food themed quilt blocks. This list will be included with the newsletter.
Sue also sent around a survey, asking members for their ideas for classes for next year’s program. Sue will pass this list around at the next couple of meetings. With an idea of what classes members might like, it will help the program committee when it comes time for setting their budget, and scheduling teachers.
July 18 will be the Leaf Shadow Class. Bobbie passed around the sign-up sheet. There is room for 20 people in the class. The cost is not known at this time, but Bobbie wouldn’t anticipate it to be much more than $20. The instructor will provide the fabric. The supply list will be in the newsletter.

MINNEKAHTA QUILTERS GUILD MINUTES
March 12, 2009
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Julie Standen called the meeting to order at 7 PM. There were 28 members present. One guest was introduced: Bonnie, a resident of the State Home.
MINUTES: Dorothy moved to approve the minutes from the February 12, 2009 meeting, with Bobbie seconding the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Delores presented the financial report. The current balance is $2,545.69. Income deposited was $180 for 2009 member dues, and $5 overpayment from SDQG. There were no expenses.
APRIL GUILD MEETING: The meeting in April is scheduled on Holy Thursday. Both the president and the vice-president have church commitments, so neither will be available to preside over the meeting. Pearl made a motion to cancel the April meeting and Ginny seconded that motion. The discussion on this motion included the fact that Beth, as chairman of the 2010 CITH raffle quilt, would need more time at this meeting to discuss this project. Beth also asked that all members watch their email for continued instructions/information on the 2010 raffle quilt. A vote was taken on the motion to cancel April’s meeting, and it passed with unanimous approval.
LIBRARIAN: There was no librarian report.
HISTORIAN: There was no historian report.
PROGRAM: Bobbie reported the hot pad class on March 7 went well. There were about 10 participants. Bobbie reports that there are supplies and patterns on the back table, if anyone would like to take some.
Today is the last day to sign up for UFO’s. See Cora for your sign up cards.
The Block of the Month drawing will continue, and the winner will be drawn at the end of the meeting tonight. Be sure to be thinking of a theme, should your name be drawn. Because April’s guild meeting has been cancelled, two names, for the March and April blocks, will be drawn this evening, with blocks due at the May meeting.
Joan presented the quarterly quilt charity report. She handed out a copy of the report, which will also appear in our newsletter. She reported on three charity quilt projects that benefited Alzheimer’s, a Valentine quilt project for children, and quilts of valor. The purpose of the charity quilt reports is educate the guild on various charity projects that are available, so that the guild can decide if they would like to participate in a charitable quilt project.
The April workday is April 4. Cora and Sue presented information on the project for that day, which is a challenge quilt. The supply list, and instructions have been handed out. The challenge quilt involves the use of special rulers needed to make half square and quarter square triangles. Cora asks that, prior to the class, we choose our fabrics, wash and iron the fabrics, and cut into four inch strips. The rest of the cutting will take place during the class. Ann will have these special rulers at her shop.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
2009 CITH Raffle Quilt: Arrangements have been made to show the 2009 raffle quilt at HeartSong Quilts during the Shop Hop, which begins on April 4. There is a sign-up sheet for selling tickets during the Shop Hop week, April 4 through April 11. Call Beth at 745-6548 to sign up.
The quilt will also be shown at the Chadron Quilt show scheduled for the end of April. Beth will email a sign up sheet for selling tickets at that show.
2010 CITH Raffle Quilt: Beth reported that a total of 42 nine patch squares will be needed for this project. She asks that all squares be turned in this evening. She will then get a total of all the squares turned in and see if more are needed. Beth handed out the template, fabrics, and instructions for making the children. This will require appliquéing, and Beth said that any appliqué method can be used. Everyone is encouraged to embellish their children in any way they choose. These are due back by the June meeting.

TIPS
Remove fabric or quilts from the dryer before they are completely dry. Fabric is easier to iron when the wrinkles haven’t been hard set by the heat, and slightly damp quilts can be laid out and squared up on the floor. There’s also less wear on the finish of the materials.
